Our verdictKasa smart plugs are the correct first smart-home purchase: cheap, reliable, no hub, no subscription, and they work with whatever assistant your house already uses. Lamps gain schedules, holiday lights automate themselves, and the away-mode makes an empty house look lived in. The rare product with almost no honest downside at its price.

Living with it

Smart plugs sound trivial until schedules quietly upgrade the household: the living room lamp fades on at sunset, the kids' fan cuts off at midnight, the Christmas tree runs itself all December, and 'did I leave the curling iron on' gets answered from the driveway. Kasa's app is the least annoying in the category, and voice control through Alexa or Google turns any dumb lamp into a 'turn off the lights' lamp.

The reliability difference

The cheap-smart-plug market is a swamp of no-name brands that drop off Wi-Fi weekly and require sketchy apps. Kasa's entire value is that it doesn't: plugs stay connected for months, schedules fire on time, and the brand behind it (TP-Link) actually issues firmware updates. The one setup quirk - it speaks 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only - matters for five minutes during pairing and never again.

Should you buy it?

If you own zero smart-home gear, start here: a two-pack costs about $30 and teaches you what automation you'd actually use before you invest in anything bigger. Renters especially - plugs move out when you do. Just match the job: lamps, fans, string lights, and simple appliances are perfect; anything needing more than on/off (dimming, thermostats, motors with settings) needs purpose-built gear instead.
